The Bed Bug Breakdown

Bed bugs are one of the most disruptive pests a short-term rental can face. These tiny hitchhikers are masters at hiding and spreading quickly—making early detection and treatment essential.

What Are Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects that feed on human blood, typically at night. They're about the size of an apple seed and hide in mattress seams, bed frames, furniture, and even behind wall outlets.

Life Cycle of a Bed Bug:

  • Egg: Female bed bugs lay 1–5 eggs per day. Eggs hatch in about 6–10 days.

  • Nymph: Young bed bugs (nymphs) pass through 5 stages before adulthood, needing a blood meal to molt at each stage.

  • Adult: Adults live several months and can survive weeks without feeding—making them especially resilient.

Signs You Have Bed Bugs:

  • Small, dark spots on sheets (fecal matter)

  • Shed skins or eggshells in mattress seams

  • Red, itchy bites in a line or cluster

  • A musty odor (in severe infestations)

Why They’re a Problem in STRs:
Bed bugs travel easily in luggage and clothing, making STRs a prime target. A single unnoticed guest can introduce them—and they won’t leave on their own.
